THE CITY SERIES TORONTO: JOHN D.

THIS IS SUCH A COOL AND QUAINT AREA THAT WE ARE SHOOTING IN TODAY. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO LIVE IN THIS NEIGHBORHOOD ORIGINALLY?

I wish I could say that I had a really interesting story about how I searched and searched for this hidden gem in Liberty Village, but I was shooting a TV show around the corner and working 14 hour days six days a week so this was the only place close enough that I could sneak out at lunch to look at it. I was in and out in five minutes but knew right away that it was the perfect space for my business.

WHERE IS YOUR FAVORITE AREA IN TORONTO AND WHY?
I feel like that’s an impossible question… Toronto has so many awesome hoods that each come with their own traits that make it special. Bloor West for vegan eats, Queen West for shopping and drinks, Toronto Island for the beach, Trinity Bellwoods for dog watching, and Parkdale for people watching.

WHAT'S THE BEST TYPE OF SHOE TO WEAR WHEN YOU ARE RUNNING AROUND, SHOOTING THE AMAZING RACE CANADA?
I’m still experimenting. I've tried a different shoe every season. This last season I went with a lightweight cross trainer. I wear one pair of shoes for the entire month and I needed something I could get wet,  but dries quickly, and lets my feet breath when running in places like India and South America.

YOUR JOB HAS TAKEN YOU TO SOME AMAZING LOCATIONS, WHERE HAS BEEN MOST MEMORABLE SO FAR?
Running through Macua, China comes to mind. It is a couple hours from Hong Kong by boat and it’s like a mini Vegas in the middle of China!

FOR YOUR FIRST LOOK, WE'VE GOT YOU IN THE COOL NATIVE APOLLOS WITH RICHER POORER SOCKS. HOW ARE YOU LIKING THE BALANCE OF THESE TWO BRANDS TOGETHER?
The shoe is totally my style; lightweight, breathable, and they look great! There is something special about having a cool pair of socks on with the right shoe. Even if people don’t see the socks you know they are there and that you look good.

YOU'VE GOT THE PEOPLE'S FOOTWEAR PHILIPS SNEAKER AND THE COZY CYPRESS. WHICH ONE HAVE YOU BEEN WEARING MORE AND DO THEY FIT NICELY INTO YOUR WARDROBE?
They both fit perfectly with my wardrobe but I tend to wear the Philips a bit more just because it’s a casual sneaker that goes with everything. But I love the Cypress and how comfy it is for walking around downtown or even hiking!

WHAT ARE YOUR STYLE ESSENTIALS WHEN YOU'RE TRAVELING?
I travel with a lot of equipment and so I don’t usually get to pack a lot of clothes so my style when travelling is layered and multipurpose. Everything I bring has to be able to be made into two or three outfits so I’m not wearing the same thing for weeks on the road.

TOP 3 FAVORITE WARDROBE ITEMS?
Colorful button up, baggy comfortable sweater, and a good pair of jeans.

TELL US HOW FARMHOUSE CREATIVE CAME TO BE?
I’ve always been drawn to sound. When I was a kid I played in bands and even when I watched movies I was always drawn to the sound effects. In University I studied music and business in hopes of finding a career in sound and then I went to a specialized audio engineering college and realized the most lucrative way to have longevity in this business was to have my own company. Growing up on a farm inspired The Farmhouse Creative name and rather than take over the family business I adopted the name into what I was passionate about.

SINCE YOU SPECIALIZE IN SOUND, WHAT MUSICIAN OR BANDS WOULD YOU WANT TO SCORE THE SOUNDTRACK TO YOUR LIFE?
I specialize in sound but the ironic part is I enjoy my quiet time. I think the soundtrack to my life would be something subtle, silent, and with a nice melody like explosions in the sky.

TELL US HOW YOU THINK SOUND AFFECTS THE FILM-GOERS EXPERIENCE.

Sound is a very subtle craft that goes unnoticed if it’s done well. What most probably don’t realize is that every sound is added afterward from the tiniest foot step, bird in the distance, or gust of wind. It’s all part of sound design so it needs to be incredibly realistic and true sounding otherwise it pulls you out of the experience.

FAVORITE PROJECT YOU'VE WORKED ON SO FAR? WHAT IS A PROJECT YOU'D LOVE TO BE A PART OF?
My favorite project was the movie Violent. I went to shoot it all in Norway with the band We Are The City and it was the one of the biggest learning experiences of my career so far. I would love to work on a movie with a director that cares deeply about the sound, such as P.T. Anderson, The Cohen Brothers, or Quentin Tarantino.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE SOCIAL MEDIA CHANNEL AND WHY?
I love Instagram even though I rarely post on it. I love how curated it’s become and how so many people’s profiles are now thoughtfully put together.

WHAT'S THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU'VE RECEIVED THAT'S HELPED YOU GET TO WHERE YOU'RE AT TODAY?
My grandfather wrote a book called The Power Of Purpose and he always reiterated to me how important having purpose is and that purpose isn’t something grand or spectacular necessarily. It can be having a family, raising good kids, or dedicating yourself to a job you love etc. The most successful, happiest, luckiest people are the ones who stick by their purpose.

SINCE WE SHOT YOU AND LAUREN TOGETHER, HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT COUPLE'S STYLE MATCHING?
I feel like when you live with somebody long enough it becomes more of an inception than a decision.

THE GREAT DEBATE IS HAPPENING NOW, WHAT'S YOUR VOTE FOR CALLING TORONTO TDOT OR THE6?
I’ll call it what the 6 God calls it. Who calls it TDot any more?!

WHAT'S YOUR NEXT SHOE PURCHASE ON SHOES.COM?
New spring runners/trainers.
